Notes on how to use this page

Ham Radio DX
The DX Cluster page shows recent ham radio DX Cluster spots. Clicking on the DX station will load this page with the closest receivers shown and the frequency and mode entered automatically. Receivers will be shown on the map with color coded signal strength. The receiver list can also be sorted by signal strength. Tip: Pay attention to the location of the transmitter on the map! DXpedition callsigns are sometimes centered on the QSL manager or home call of the station. In this case add a / to the call and it will be interpreted according to the country location.

Press the Monitor Hot DX 🔥   button to automatically show the hottest DX (station with the most recent DX Cluster spots) automatically refreshed once every five minutes. While running, the HOT DX button will be red and the tab title will be the station voted the hottest. Press the Monitor HOT DX 🔥 button again to turn it off.

Find KiwiSDR receivers near a location.
Click the Mercator map, or drag the azimuthal map to place the target location at the center of the crosshairs. The list of receivers will be sorted by distance from the target location. Sort the list by estimated signal strength, SNR, country, time zone, longitude, number of slots open, etc. by clicking the title at the top of the table.

Generate a map for a transmitter.
If a callsign is in the database (4U1UN, CHU, WWV, etc), enter it as the TX Callsign. Autocomplete will help. Press Recalculate to generate a propagation map from the transmitter location on the selected frequency. If a station transmits on multiple frequencies, delete the suggested frequency and press space to choose from a list.

The estimated Signal Strength for the path from the selected transmitter to the receivers in the list on the frequency selected is shown. Estimates are based on the current smoothed sunspot number (SSN) and produced by VE3NEA's fast DVOACAP implementation of VOACAP. The propagation maps with color coded dots show the estimated signal strength at receivers currently online. Real life signals will depend on antenna type and beaming direction, power levels, and transmitter and receiver local topography. Forecasts have a resolution of one hour and 15 degrees and are only valid between 3MHz and 30MHz.

Save a transmitter

Enter the callsign and coordinates (or drag the map to set the location as well as you know it and transfer the coordinates with the Set as TX button) and enter a frequency. Uncheck the autofill box beside the callsign to override incorrect autofilled coordinates. The frequency may also include KiwiSDR arguments such as cwn for CW narrow filter or amn for AM Narrow filter. Saved transmitter locations and frequencies are available to all users. Press the Save TX button to save the transmitter. This should not be used for ham stations that do not operate on one frequency except to enter a corrected location. The checkbox beside the transmitter callsign controls autofill of the latitude and longitude allowing a custom value to override an incorrect saved location obtained from hamqth.com.

Generate a propagation map for a receiver
Click on the gridsquare in the Map column for a displayed receiver. The map will reload with the receiver as a transmitter so the propagation heard by that receiver will be shown.

You can also click on the map or drag the Azimuthal map to fill in the coordinates of a given location. The coordinates can be moved to the transmit field with the Set as TX key. The Recalculate button will now generate a map as seen from that location.

Listen to a receiver
Click on the station button to open the receiver in a new tab. If a frequency and mode are saved and associated with the station, the receiver will be tuned appropriately. The icons on the station button indicate features available on the radio, such as switchable antennas, VLF capability and GPS timing.

Receiver History
If you click on a receiver to listen to a specific frequency, you will be asked if you heard the signal you were looking for. Collected feedback can be seen by clicking on the receiver history column. The number in the column is the average number of slots in use recently, a reflection of the receiver popularity.

After listening to an SDR, the feedback popup will ask you if you heard the station you were looking for. If the SDR was unavailable, click the yellow button. If you have any comments about the receiver, please enter them. Or just press the green or red button a second time to close the popup. If it is too late to remember, just click the CLOSE button at the top right of the dialog or click elsewhere on the page.

This feedback is added to the history of each Receiver, viewed by clicking on the right-most column of the table or from the Receiver History button at the top. Eventually, if there are enough contributions, the HEARD/NOT HEARD figures will tabulated.

Show the Transmitter or Receiver on a Street or Satellite Map

Click on the grid square on the transmitter entry to open a street map. Click on the receiver information (last column) and then on the displayed latitude and longitude link. Note that the public GPS coordinates for a given receiver are intentionally fuzzy.

Don't forget that you can use the browser search (ctl-F) to search for receivers using terms such as VLF or an antenna type LZ1AQ or any other identifier of a station you once used and want to listen to again.
